Do blinds or shutters reduce noise?

A little, sometimes. Soft furnishings at the window can take the edge off how a room sounds, but blinds and shutters are not soundproofing. If road noise is a real problem, the fix is the glass, not what hangs in front of it. Here is the honest version.

The short answer

Blinds and shutters are not soundproofing. Most road noise comes through the glass and the gaps around the window frame, and a blind hanging in front of the window does very little to stop it.

What a fabric blind can do is soften how a room sounds. Hard rooms — tiles, timber floors, big windows — tend to echo, and some fabric at the window can take the edge off that. Some people find that makes a room feel a little quieter. It is not the same as reducing noise from outside.

What about honeycomb blinds?

People often ask whether honeycomb blinds reduce noise, because their air-filled cells insulate well against heat. The cells may slightly affect how a room sounds, but they are not an acoustic product and we do not position them as a substitute for proper acoustic solutions.

Honeycomb is still an excellent blind for heat, cold and privacy. Choose it for those reasons, not for noise.

If noise is the real problem

For significant noise — a busy road, a flight path, late-night traffic — dedicated acoustic solutions such as appropriate glazing are the relevant fix, because they deal with the glass and the frame where the sound gets in. We do not supply glazing, so talk to a glazing specialist about that part.

If you are replacing windows anyway, it is worth doing both: the right glass for the noise, and the right blind or shutter for light, privacy and heat. We are happy to measure once the new windows are in.

Common questions

Do honeycomb blinds reduce noise?

They may slightly soften how a room sounds, but they are not soundproofing and will not fix significant road noise. For that, acoustic glazing is the relevant solution.

Do plantation shutters block noise?

Not in any meaningful way. Shutters are excellent for light, privacy and looks, but noise mainly comes through the glass and window frame.

Are there soundproof blinds?

We do not sell any blind as soundproof, Noise is mostly a glazing problem.

Do you install acoustic glazing?

No. We supply and install shutters and blinds. For glazing, speak to a glazing specialist.
