Blockout (blackout) roller blinds

What blockout actually means
Blockout — or blackout, depending on where you learned the word — describes the fabric. It has a coating or weave that stops light passing through it, which is what makes it the darkest roller blind you can buy.
How dark the room gets also depends on the fitting. A blind is a panel of fabric hanging in front of a window, so a little light can find its way around the sides, top or bottom. How much depends on how the blind is fitted, the window and which way it faces. We will be straight with you about what to expect before you order.
Fitting for the darkest room
Where the blind is mounted makes a difference. Fitted inside the window reveal it looks neat and sits close to the glass; fitted outside the reveal it can overlap the edges of the opening and cut down the light that gets around the sides. Which way the fabric rolls off the tube matters too — we explain that on our front roll vs back roll page.
We look at the window, the room and how dark you need it, and recommend the fit that gets closest.
Heat and glare
A blockout blind on a west-facing window does more than darken the room. Lowered in the afternoon, it helps keep the sun and glare off the room behind it. How much difference it makes depends on the window and the fabric, so we do not put a number on it.
When you want daylight as well
A blockout blind is up or down. If you want soft light and privacy during the day and darkness at night, a dual blind pairs a light-filtering fabric with a blockout on the same window, so you can use either.

Common questions
Is blockout the same as blackout?
Yes. Blockout is the usual Australian term and blackout the American one; both describe a fabric that stops light passing through it.
Will a blockout blind make my room completely dark?
It is the darkest roller blind option, but a little light can still come around the edges depending on the window and how the blind is fitted. We will tell you what to expect for your room.
Do blockout blinds help with heat?
Lowered on a sunny window, they help keep sun and glare off the room. How much depends on the window and the fabric.
Can blockout blinds be motorised?
Motorisation is available across many roller blind ranges. We will confirm the options for the fabric and system you choose.
