Premium timber
Western Red Cedar shutters
The top of our timber range. Cedar is light for its size and holds its shape, which is why it works on the big openings where a heavier panel would sag. It is the most expensive material we fit, and the one people choose when the window is the feature of the room.

Where cedar earns its price
Weight is the whole story. A wide opening filled with heavy panels puts strain on the hinges and the frame, and over enough summers that shows up as a shutter which no longer closes flush. Cedar is light enough to span further without that problem, and stable enough that the panels stay true through a Brisbane summer.
The grain is the other reason. Stained cedar has a depth a painted finish cannot imitate, and it suits the Queenslanders and renovated post-war homes we work in most across the northside. If you want the timber to read as timber, this is the one.
Where we would not use it
Bathrooms, ensuites and laundries. Steam and timber are a poor combination whatever the species, and polyresin does that job better for less. We would rather tell you that at the quote than replace a warped panel in three years.
On a standard bedroom window, another timber will often do the same job for less as well. Cedar earns its place on the wide spans and the windows you actually look at.
Frames and how the panels move
Hinged panels are the default and suit most windows. Sliding panels run on a track, which is what we use on sliding doors and wide openings where a swing would be in the way. Bi-fold panels fold back against each other so the whole opening clears, and fixed panels suit high windows and awkward shapes where nothing needs to open.
Which one you end up with is decided at the measure, against the opening and whatever is around it — furniture, door swings, walkways. Z-frame sits proud of the opening; L-frame sits inside the reveal.

Common questions
Is cedar suitable for a bathroom?
No — we fit polyresin in bathrooms, ensuites and laundries. Steam and timber do not last well together, whatever the species, and polyresin handles it better for less money.
Does cedar fade?
Any timber shifts a little in strong sun. A stained finish holds up well, and when we measure we will talk through which side of the house the shutters are going on and what to expect.
Can cedar shutters be motorised?
Motorisation is available across many of our ranges, though not every product. We confirm what suits the specific shutter when we quote rather than promising it up front.
How do I clean them?
Dust with a soft cloth or a brush head. Avoid harsh cleaners on a stained finish — water and a little mild detergent on a cloth is plenty for marks.
