Turning a deck into a room
Most Brisbane decks and patios are open on one side too many. The afternoon sun comes in low, the storm rain comes in sideways, and the space you built for summer gets used a few weekends a year. A run of shutters along the exposed side changes that: tilt the louvres for shade and a breeze, close them when the weather turns, fold them away when it is perfect.
Because they are louvres rather than a solid wall, you keep the airflow and the garden view. It still feels like outside — just an outside you can use on more days.
Why aluminium outside
Timber and polyresin are indoor materials. Outside, the shutter has to live with full sun, rain and humidity, so outdoor shutters are powder-coated aluminium. We cover the material itself in more detail on the aluminium shutters page.
Powder coat comes in a range of colours, and we bring samples so you can see them against the house. Plenty of people go charcoal or black to sit with modern window frames; others pick a colour close to the trims so the shutters disappear into the building.
How the panels move
On a wide deck, bi-fold or sliding panels are usually the answer: they stack out of the way at one end so the whole side can open up. Hinged panels suit a narrower opening or a doorway, and fixed panels can close off a side you never need to walk through.
Getting that right is most of the job. We measure the openings, look at where people walk and where the table sits, and suggest a layout before anything is ordered.
External window shutters
Aluminium shutters can also go on the outside face of an exposed window — a western bedroom, a stairwell, a window that takes the full afternoon sun. An external shutter does a different job from an indoor one, and we will talk through what it can and cannot do on your aspect.

Common questions
What are outdoor shutters made from?
Powder-coated aluminium. Timber and polyresin are indoor materials; aluminium is the one that suits full sun and weather.
Can outdoor shutters fold right back?
Bi-fold and sliding panels stack to one end of the opening, so the side of the deck can open up almost completely. Which works best depends on the span and where you walk through.
Will they stop all the rain?
Closed louvres keep most wind-driven rain and sun off the area, but they are louvres, not a sealed wall. We will be straight with you about what to expect on your particular aspect.
Can you match the colour to my house?
We bring powder-coat colour samples to the measure so you can see them against your trims, window frames and roof, and pick the closest.
