Buying guide · shutters or blinds

Shutters vs blinds: which suits your home?

We sell and install both, so we have no reason to push one. Shutters are a fixture that changes how a house looks; blinds are simpler, lighter on the budget and come in more fabrics. Here is how to tell which one a room needs.

How they change the room

Shutters are a piece of joinery. They sit in a frame around the window, stay put all year and change how the house looks from the inside and from the street. People renovating a Queenslander or doing a whole house tend to choose them for exactly that reason.

Blinds are quieter. Rolled up, a roller blind nearly disappears and the window is the feature. With a wide range of fabrics and colours, blinds are also the easier way to add colour or texture to a room.

Light and privacy

The big practical difference is the in-between. A blind is up or down. A shutter can be tilted, so you can angle the louvres up to let daylight in while stopping people seeing in — useful on a street-facing window or in a bathroom.

For the darkest possible room, a blockout blind wins, because blockout fabric stops light through the blind itself. Shutters make a room much darker when closed but never completely dark. Dual roller blinds are the blind world's answer to the in-between: a light-filtering fabric for the day and a blockout for night, fitted together on the one window.

Cost

Roller blinds are usually the lower-cost option, which is why they are common in new homes once the building budget has been spent. Shutters are a larger investment, and the gap depends on the materials, the size of the windows and how the panels open. Every job is quoted from your actual measurements, so we can price both for the same rooms and let you compare.

Plenty of homes use both

It does not have to be one or the other. A common mix is shutters in the living areas, bathrooms and the rooms that face the street, with blockout roller blinds in the bedrooms that need to be dark. We can plan the whole house at one measure and quote it room by room.

Common questions

Are shutters better than blinds?

Not across the board. Shutters give more control through the day and change how a house looks; blinds are simpler, come in more fabrics, are usually the lower-cost option and give the darkest room when you choose blockout.

Are shutters more expensive than blinds?

Usually, yes. How much more depends on the material, the windows and the configuration, so we quote both for your actual rooms if you would like to compare.

Which is better for a bedroom?

If the room needs to be as dark as possible, a blockout roller blind. If dark enough is fine and you want light control during the day, shutters.

Can I have shutters in some rooms and blinds in others?

Yes, and it is common. We can measure the whole house at one visit and quote each room with whichever suits it.
