Light-filtering & sunscreen roller blinds

Light-filtering, translucent or sunscreen?

These fabrics all let light through; they differ in what else they do. Light-filtering and translucent fabrics diffuse the light, so the room glows rather than glares, and people outside see a soft shape at most during the day.

Sunscreen fabrics are a fine mesh. They take the edge off harsh sun and glare on screens while leaving the view outside visible through the weave. The more open the weave, the more view and light you keep; the tighter it is, the more glare it cuts.

For the afternoon sun

A west-facing living room or home office is where these fabrics earn their keep. Lowered in the afternoon, a sunscreen blind cuts the glare on the TV or the laptop without shutting the room down. We look at which way the window faces when we recommend a fabric.

The one thing to know about night-time

Light-filtering and sunscreen fabrics give privacy in daylight because it is brighter outside than in. At night, with the lights on inside, that reverses and people can see in. For a living room that faces the street, or a bedroom, the usual answer is a dual blind: a light-filtering fabric for the day and a blockout behind it for night.

Common questions

Can people see through light-filtering blinds?

During the day, not clearly. At night with lights on inside, they can. For night-time privacy, pair the light-filtering blind with a blockout on a dual system.

What is a sunscreen roller blind?

A blind in a fine mesh fabric that cuts sun and glare while keeping a view outside through the weave. It suits living areas and home offices with strong afternoon sun.

Is sheer the same as light-filtering?

People use both words for fabrics that let light through. What matters is how much light and view you want to keep, so we show you samples at the window.

Which fabric is best for a west-facing window?

Usually a sunscreen fabric for daytime glare, with a blockout added on a dual system if the room is also a bedroom. We will look at the window before recommending one.
