Why timber

A timber venetian gives you the control of a shutter in a lighter, simpler product. Tilt the slats to angle the light, close them for privacy, or lift the whole blind clear of the window. The wood brings warmth that a fabric blind does not, which is why timber venetians suit Queenslanders, character homes and anywhere with timber floors or joinery.

Stained or painted

Stained timber shows the grain and reads like furniture. Painted timber, usually in white or a soft neutral, sits back into the window frame for a cleaner look. Both come to the measure as samples, because a stain that looks right on a sample board can look quite different against your floor.

Where we would not use timber

Bathrooms, ensuites and laundries. Steam gets into timber over time, so we would put composite or aluminium venetians in those rooms instead. Composite keeps the wood look; aluminium is slimmer and lighter.

Where the name came from

Shutters Direct began as Timber Venetians and Shutters Direct, first in Paddington and later out of Enoggera, before the move to the current Geebung showroom. Timber venetians were in the name for a reason, and they are still something we like fitting.

Common questions

Are timber venetians good for bathrooms?

We would not recommend them. Composite or aluminium venetians handle steam and humidity better.

Timber venetians or plantation shutters?

Both give you tilting slats. Shutters are a fixed piece of joinery; venetians are lighter and lift clear of the window. Our shutters vs blinds guide covers the difference.

Can timber venetians be painted?

Yes — painted or stained, depending on the range. We bring samples of both.

Is timber more expensive than composite?

It depends on the product and the window, so we compare them on your actual windows. Western Red Cedar is our premium venetian.
