Red Hill is named for its steep hills and red rock and soil. The homes are mostly Queenslanders and workers’ cottages clinging to the slopes, many renovated, with views over the city from the upper streets.
Steep blocks mean some rooms look straight into a neighbour’s window and others look out over the city. Shutters handle both — close the louvres for privacy, tilt them open for the view.

A suburb we know well
Sandie grew up in Dorrington — now part of Ashgrove — and did a few laps of the old Red Hill Skating Rink in her time. The rink opened in 1920 and ran until a fire in 2004. St Brigid’s Church, rebuilt in 1914 to seat up to 1,000 people, still looks down over the suburb.
Andrew has been installing blinds and shutters in Red Hill since 2014.
